Kids love toys!

When I wasn't suffering the effects from the annual assault to my nasal passages there was plenty to keep this snot-nosed lad busy.

There were quite a few Doc Ed shows this week. We're still fine tuning the latest show for kindergarteners and it's going well. Karston is a big hit with the kids. I've added a few props to the shows because the kids respond very well to visual aides, that is, props like a red water pump.

This week was also spent working on character studies for the picture book I'll be illustrating. They're in black and white right now but color studies will soon follow.

There's also a little prop work coming our way from the San Antonio Metropolitan for the production of the "Snow Queen" which opens in November. This show was staged several years ago so they still have all the sets and props they used. More than likely the bulk of the work will be making repairs on some of the props and set pieces as needed. There is the possibility of making a new set piece.

A couple of years ago I made a very large oven and a cage as well as Punch and Judy puppets for their production of Hansel and Gretel. 

I have a feeling it'll be a busy fall. That's good!

I met him back in 2003 when I started working at Ripley's Haunted Adventure where he was an actor. Now he has his own special makeup effects business: Notbot Fx, and it's going strong. Check out his website here. He's very talented, creative and dedicated, working hard to perfect his craft. He's also a pretty funny guy.

Doc at Cody Branch Library

Today was a fun day for good ol' Doc Edwards. He got to spend some quality time with pre-k kiddoes at the library talking all about the water from the Edwards Aquifer. Now you'd think that'd be a mighty tall order keeping the kids interested in a presentation about water... well, it could be. Fortunately for Doc, he's got that all figured out. He knows how to edu-tain the young'ns pretty good. That's not to say he doesn't work hard to do it. There's always more than a bit of sweat on his brow at the end of a show. But he wouldn't do it if he truly didn't love what he does.

Last Night's ArtSlam

My neighbors at ArtSlam last night.

Last night's MartialArtSlam was a lot of fun. No rain. Whew! Unfortunately I didn't sell my piece though it had a lot of admirers "ooohing" and "aaahing" as well as taking photos of it. The older folks in the crowd  got a kick out of it especially. They got the Queen reference right away. It's my first "mashup" I think, and the first of many for sure.

During the course of the evening I chatted with some of my fellow artists. Some remembered me from the last time. Steve, my friend from back when I worked at Ripley's Hauted Adventure was also there doing his thing. He had some words of advice to share about selling art around town. He's a very smart young man.

A young lady and her friend stopped by my spot to check out my work. The young lady, it turned out, was a designer making very unique craft items that are very beautiful and intricate.  It was really impressive and I thought I'd share it here because, as artists, I think we should work together as much as we can. It's not an easy business to be in.

I spoke to the father of one young artist there that evening doing large spray can art paintings who told me his son had been in six art shows so far this month and would be in several more around town before the months end. Wow!

It looked like there were more artists last night than at the previous event. There were tables full of art to sell as the artists painted their auction piece. It would be obvious to anyone there that the artists  work very hard to do what they love and it was very inspiring to around such fun creative spirits. 

 I hope to take part in the next ArtSlam which will be in November. I don't get out enough. I'm usually tied to my drawing table. I need to socialize more and this is such a great way do that an paint under the stars. Who could ask for anything more!
